Dr. David E. Kantrowitz, MD is a fellowship-trained orthopedic sports medicine surgeon. He specializes in minimally invasive, arthroscopic procedures on the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee.
Dr. Kantrowitz is a New Jersey native whose medical journey began at the prestigious Bergen County Academies high school, where he was enrolled in the Academy for Medical Science and Technology. He attended college at Duke University, where he graduated magna cum laude and with a distinction for his research in the field of Biology. Dr. Kantrowitz completed medical school at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons. In medical school, he was selected to the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) society and received the Albert B. Knapp Scholarship Award, which is given to the medical student(s) with the highest academic achievement in the first three years.
His desire for preserving and restoring patients' mobility led Dr. Kantrowitz to complete his residency in orthopedic surgery at the historic Mount Sinai & St. Luke's Roosevelt hospital system in New York City, which is consistently ranked within the top 10 in the country for orthopedic surgery. While there, he provided medical coverage for professional tennis players at the 2023 US Open. Dr. Kantrowitz followed his five years of orthopedic surgery residency with an additional year of fellowship training in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery at the renowned American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) in Birmingham, Alabama.
At ASMI, Dr. Kantrowitz had the privilege of training in the lineage of Dr. James Andrews, working directly with mentors Dr. Lyle Cain, Dr. Jeff Dugas, and Dr. Benton Emblom. Dr. Kantrowitz performed over 700 surgeries and acted as a team physician for many organizations, taking care of athletes from the University of Alabama, Auburn University, Tuskegee, the Birmingham Barons professional baseball team (Chicago White Sox MiLB affiliate), the WWE, and the Birmingham Ballet. Dr. Kantrowitz graduated from fellowship with refined, cutting-edge surgical techniques, and was also awarded the biomechanical research award.
Dr. Kantrowitz received his first research grant while in medical school from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to fund his work on ulnar collateral ligament (Tommy John) injuries and femoroacetabular impingement, which he presented on a national stage. Since then, he has published over 40 manuscripts, textbook chapters, abstracts/posters, and surgical technique videos, most recently co-authoring a textbook chapter on shoulder bicep and labrum pathology for the newest edition of Orthopedic Knowledge Update. Dr. Kantrowitz has a clinical expertise and interest in the treatment of rotator cuff tears, shoulder dislocations and labral tears, elbow ulnar collateral ligament injuries (Tommy John reconstruction and/or repair with internal brace), ACL ruptures (with expertise in reconstruction using all graft types), meniscus tears, knee cartilage injuries (with training in advanced cartilage preservation techniques such as marrow stimulation, osteochondral autografts and allografts, MACI, and stem cell therapies), and hip femoroacetabular impingement with a specific interest in hip arthroscopy. He is also certified to perform robotic-assisted knee replacements using the Mako™ robot.
