    OCCURRENCE OF MENINGIOMAS

    Meningiomas can appear anywhere in the central nervous system (CNS). Scientists do not yet know what causes meningiomas, yet theories suggest they may occur due to genetics or exposure to radiation. Though anyone may be diagnosed with meningiomas, they are most common in older populations and occur more frequently in women.

    GRADING MENINGIOMAS

    All tumors are graded based on their size, location, aggressiveness, and risk of recurrence. Meningiomas are categorized as follows:

    • Grade I: Also called low-grade tumors, these are the most common. The tumor cells grow slowly and are unlikely to spread beyond their point of origin.
    • Grade II: Also called atypical meningiomas, these mid-grade tumors are slow-growing but have a higher chance of recurring after removal.
    • Grade III: Also called anaplastic meningiomas, these tumors are fast-growing and malignant. They quickly spread and affect the tissues around them.

    SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

    Not every meningioma displays symptoms. In fact, some small, slow-growing tumors may exist for years without causing a noticeable sign. Others have progressive symptoms that worsen as the tumor grows and may vary based on the tumors' location. These symptoms may include:

    • Blurred or double vision
    • Chronic headaches that progressively worsen
    • Memory loss or cognitive difficulties
    • Loss of hearing
    • Recurring seizures
    • Weakness in limbs and extremities

    • MONITORING - Very small, low-grade tumors may not require immediate treatment. In this case, we utilize periodic brain scans to monitor the tumor. Your observation schedule will be personalized based on your condition, circumstances, and the risk presented by the tumor.
    • NEUROSURGERY - If your meningioma causes symptoms or shows signs of growth, surgery may be necessary. Our neurosurgeons will remove as much of the tumor as possible without damaging healthy structures. If there is residual tumor tissue left, it will be monitored for growth. If necessary, we may also recommend stereotactic radiosurgery or traditional radiation therapy to eliminate any remaining cancerous tissue.
    • CYBERKNIFE RADIOSURGERY - Recurrent meningiomas and those beyond the reach of traditional surgery may be treated using CyberKnife Radiosurgery. This procedure delivers a focused beam of radiation to the tumor, targeting tumor cells with great precision while avoiding damage to surrounding tissue.
