Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder characterized by involuntary, sustained muscle contractions that force the body into twisting, repetitive movements or abnormal postures. Dystonia can affect a single body part (focal dystonia, such as cervical dystonia in the neck), a specific region (segmental dystonia), or the entire body (generalized dystonia).
When muscle spasms cause persistent pain, severe physical disability, or functional impairment that no longer responds to conservative treatments, Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) provides an advanced surgical option.
In dystonia, abnormal signaling patterns within the basal ganglia—the brain’s movement control center—cause opposing muscle groups to contract simultaneously.
During DBS surgery, a neurosurgeon implants fine electrodes precisely into the globus pallidus internus (GPi), the primary output nucleus of the basal ganglia. By delivering continuous, controlled electrical stimulation to this region, DBS normalizes brain circuit activity, overriding the disruptive signals causing muscle contractions.
