Those are the words used to describe the seizures experienced by someone with Epilepsy, a neurological disorder that affects the lives of over 2 million people every year.

In many cases, the cause of this condition is unknown. It is, however, very responsive to treatment as individuals with this ailment can lead very productive lives.

Symptoms of epilepsy vary considerably depending on the brain cells that are affected. Nevertheless, some of the most common symptoms are:

    • Changes in smell, taste, or sound
    • Nausea
    • Numbness
    • Loss of awareness
    • Tremors
    • Convulsions and involuntary muscle movements
    • Difficulty speaking and memory issues
    • Fatigue

Additionally, it’s important to note that not all individuals who experience seizures exhibit symptoms. In some cases, seizures will take place without warning.

Epilepsy is also associated with cognitive and behavioral symptoms that can adversely impact one’s daily functioning and quality of life. Neuropsychological evaluations of individuals with epilepsy focus on assessing the cognitive and emotional symptoms, and the neuropsychologist then uses that information to assist the referring provider with developing a comprehensive treatment plan.

Neuropsychological evaluations are also used during the presurgical phase of treatment to assist the patient’s provider in determining where in the brain seizures may be coming from and to inform the provider of possible post-surgical risks (e.g., decline in memory or language functions, or worsening of mood).

Dr. Anthony De Marco of IGEA Brain, Spine & Orthopedics empathizes with this concern and strives to provide his patients with a level of care that puts them at ease. Anything less than that isn’t—and never should be—optional.

In keeping with this patient-centered approach, Dr. De Marco implements a consultative, customized, empirically-based evaluation process that meets the needs of the individual and answers the question posed by the referring provider. Learn more about the details of his assessment process:
