If you or a loved one currently struggles with chronic migraines, then you know just how uncomfortable they can be – and just how hopeless the battle might seem. Fortunately, you don’t need to fight them alone. IGEA Brain, Spine & Orthopedics specializes in neurological disorders like chronic migraines. We serve the tri-state area of New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut with innovative treatments – like Botox injections – to relieve pain and improve quality of life.

Migraines are aggressive, throbbing headaches. They can last anywhere from several hours up to multiple days, with pain severe enough to interfere with normal activities. Infrequent migraines can be prevented with prescribed anti-seizure, antidepressant, or blood pressure medicines. Chronic headaches, however, are much more difficult to treat.

At IGEA Brain, Spine & Orthopedics, we’re able to treat migraines with Botox injections. Botox is a form of botulinum toxin produced by the same bacteria that cause botulism. It is purified and used in tiny doses, so it can deaden certain nerve endings and reduce muscle contractions. In fact, Botox is the only FDA-approved migraine treatment currently available. By relaxing the muscles, Botox can relieve migraine symptoms and even reduce their frequency.

The Botox procedure is relatively simple and doesn’t require any special preparation, though patients are advised to avoid alcohol, aspirin, or anti-inflammatory medications beforehand. During the appointment, the doctor will use a very thin needle to make injections into specific points, including:

    • Forehead
    • Temples
    • Bridge of the nose
    • Back of the head
    • Neck
    • Upper back

The whole session takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete, after which the patient can immediately return to regular activities. Patients can expect relief within one to two weeks after the appointment, with the strongest benefits appearing six weeks later. Botox treatment is not permanent, though. New pain fibers will regrow after a few months, and we recommend patients sit for a cycle of injections about once every 12 weeks.

Botox treatment is intended for patients who struggle with chronic migraines. To qualify for a Botox treatment, a patient must experience migraines at least 15 days per month. The treatment isn’t meant for patients with fewer migraines, as they can often be helped by other preventative medications.

Botox injections are used when all other treatments have failed, or when the patient is unable to take other medications due to intolerance or side effects. The injections help to relieve the migraine symptoms, such as:

    • Nausea and vomiting
    • Sensitivity to light, smells, or sounds
    • Aggressive, throbbing head pain

Keep in mind Botox is not for people who experience other forms of headaches, such as tension-related ones. Different types of headaches require different treatments to work effectively. If you are experiencing something other than a migraine, talk to your doctor about what kind of treatment can help you.
